What is Tesla repair, and why use an independent shop?
Tesla repair covers maintenance, diagnostics, and component replacement specific to electric vehicles. Unlike gas-powered cars, Teslas have no oil to change, no spark plugs, and no transmission fluid, but they still need brake fluid service, cabin filter replacement, tire rotation, suspension work, A/C desiccant service, and battery coolant maintenance.
Independent shops with EV training can perform most Tesla maintenance and out-of-warranty repairs at lower cost than Tesla service centers, often with shorter wait times. Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, having your Tesla serviced at an independent shop does not void the manufacturer warranty as long as the work is performed correctly and using quality parts.
At Ervine’s Auto Repair & Grand Rapids Hybrid and EV, our team is ASE-certified with hands-on Tesla experience. Our owner, Eric Carlson, writes the ASE certification tests for hybrid and electric vehicles, giving us a level of EV expertise that is rare among independent shops in Michigan.

Tesla PTC Heater Repair in Grand Rapids, MI
A failing PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) heater is one of the most common cabin comfort issues in Tesla vehicles, especially for Model S and Model X owners driving through Michigan winters. When the PTC heater fails, your cabin will not warm up properly even when the climate control is set to maximum heat.
Symptoms of a failing Tesla PTC heater
- Cabin takes much longer to warm up than usual
- Climate control runs but produces only mild warmth
- Range drops more than expected in cold weather
- Heater warning messages on the touchscreen
Our PTC heater repair process
Our certified Tesla technicians use advanced diagnostic tools to confirm whether your PTC heater is underperforming, has failed, or whether the issue is elsewhere in the climate control system. Most Tesla PTC heater repairs are completed within 1 to 2 days. We use genuine or OEM-equivalent components and back the work with our 3-year/36,000-mile warranty. Schedule a Tesla PTC heater repair online or call (616) 532-6600 for a free estimate.
Tesla expertise you can trust

Our shop owner, Eric Carlson, writes the ASE certification tests for hybrid and electric vehicles that technicians across the country use to become certified EV professionals, meaning the technicians servicing Teslas at competing shops were certified using exams Eric helped author.
Our team includes five ASE Master Technicians, three with the L3 designation for advanced-level work. Combined, our technicians bring more than 60 years of hands-on experience to every Tesla that enters our shop.

What Tesla owners are saying
Five-star reviews from real Tesla customers in Grand Rapids
“Absolutely the best service. Was having the worst day when my ’15 Model S left me stranded on the side of the road with a LDU fault. Michelle got my car on the books and set me up with Eric who was extremely thorough and kept me up to speed as we proceed down the path of diagnosis and repair. If you have an out-of-warranty Tesla in West Michigan this is where to take it. Top tier customer service.”

“Moving from the West Coast to MI with my Tesla, I was anxious as to whether I could find someone trustworthy and reputable to care for my vehicle. Ervine’s Auto Repair & Grand Rapids Hybrid and EV was the ticket! They promptly diagnosed some suspension issues and went out of their way to help acquire parts from out-of-state. Steve was very communicative from the beginning — always happy to answer my myriad of questions and make sure I was happy with and understood the diagnoses and repairs. Megan and Jamie in the front office were always so pleasant and helpful. They also provided a loaner vehicle for the time mine was in the shop. I love supporting small, local family businesses. I feel very fortunate to have found them! What a West MI gem!”

Tesla repair FAQ
Can independent shops repair Teslas?
Yes, independent shops with EV training and proper diagnostic equipment can perform most Tesla maintenance and out-of-warranty repairs. Federal law (Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act) protects your right to use independent service without voiding your manufacturer warranty, as long as quality parts and proper procedures are used. Tesla service centers retain exclusive access to certain warranty work and proprietary software updates.
Do Teslas need oil changes?
No, Teslas do not need oil changes because electric motors have no engine oil. However, Teslas still need regular maintenance: brake fluid every 2 years, cabin and HEPA filter replacement, tire rotation, A/C desiccant service every 4 to 6 years, and inspection of the high-voltage battery cooling system. Skipping these items can shorten the life of expensive components.
How often does a Tesla need service?
Tesla recommends maintenance based on time and mileage triggers, not fixed annual visits. Brake fluid is replaced every 2 years, cabin filters every 2 to 3 years, HEPA filters every 3 years (Model S and X), and A/C desiccant every 4 to 6 years depending on model. Tire rotation should occur every 6,250 miles. Most Tesla owners visit a service shop once or twice per year.
How much does it cost to repair a Tesla in Grand Rapids?
Tesla repair cost varies by service. Common services like 12V battery replacement, brake fluid service, and cabin filter replacement are typically less expensive at independent shops than at Tesla service centers. We provide free estimates by phone at (616) 532-6600 or online before any work begins, so you know the cost upfront. Synchrony financing is available for larger repairs.
Does servicing my Tesla at an independent shop void the warranty?
No. Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, you can use an independent shop for service without voiding your Tesla manufacturer warranty, as long as the work is performed correctly using quality parts. Keep all service records. Tesla can only deny a warranty claim if it can prove that an independent service caused the specific issue being claimed.
What Tesla models do you service?
We service all current Tesla models, including Tesla Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X. We handle vehicles in and out of warranty, including older Model S vehicles with MCU1 and MCU2 systems, and we have particular experience with LDU coolant work on older Model S Teslas.
Do you offer a warranty on Tesla repairs?
Yes. Every repair we perform comes with a 3-year/36,000-mile nationwide warranty on premium parts. This is one of the longest warranties offered by any independent shop in West Michigan, and the nationwide coverage means it travels with you if you move or take a road trip.
Do you provide loaner cars while my Tesla is being serviced?
Yes, we offer free loaner cars for customers whose Tesla service requires keeping the vehicle overnight or longer. Reserve a loaner when you book your appointment to ensure availability. There is no charge for the loaner.
Where is your shop located, and what areas do you serve?
Ervine’s Auto Repair & Grand Rapids Hybrid and EV is located at 4311 Stafford Ave SW, Grand Rapids, MI 49548.
